What do you mean by “Random Designer”, and what do you say to people who
immediately understand random to carry a negative connotation when referring to God? |

This is a tough question because very few people who profess a sincere
faith and belief in God would typically associate Him with any measure of disorder. But
fortunately, God is much more creative than we have previously understood Him to be.
Therefore, when I describe God as the Random Designer, it is truly an expression of admiration
and praise for a Creator who cared enough for His creation to harness the chaos inherent in
our world to give life, both physical AND spiritual, an opportunity to fulfill their designed promise.
In addition, we must be careful how we understand the possible meaning of words. (In scripture,
when Jesus said he would destroy this temple and rebuild it in three days, did the people of
that day miss His true meaning?) The word random is often used to describe processes that
lack a purpose, pattern or plan. But this is not the only meaning of the word. Check your
dictionary. There is another definition – a mathematical definition. It reads like this:
Random - being or relating to a member of a set whose members have an equal probability of
occurring. (My mathematics friends have been telling me for decades that they see God as
the Master Mathematician)
This mathematical definition provides the primary context for the book’s title. So you see, we
don’t need to be afraid of the word random. In the present context, it does not mean haphazard,
