Using simplified language which even a non-scientist like
myself can understand, yet at points containing flashes of near poetic elegance,
Dr. Colling in his book Random Designer has described some of the fascinating
yet complicated biological processes which make human life possible. This
is no dull science textbook which plods through the facts and statistics of
biology, but an engaging discussion of the intricacies of the biological
processes which God used to create humanity. The purpose of the book is
to help the reader “develop a personal faith and cultivate a close relationship
with God, while at the same time fully acknowledging the scientific laws and
processes that plainly govern our existence” (p. 9). Thus Colling writes as
both a trained scientist and a committed Christian.
While the book is addressed to the Christian who lacks the advanced training of
a scientist, there are two other groups in particular who Colling singles out;
atheistic scientists who reject the claim of an Intelligent Creator and
fundamentalist Christians who reject the findings of science when those findings
conflict with their interpretations of Scripture. While the former are chided
for not being open to what Colling considers the significance of the wonders
of the physical universe, it is the latter who receive the most criticism.
His early faith had been nurtured by those he labels as “Preservers of the
Faith” (p. 14). When conflicts arose over their interpretations of Scripture
and the findings of science, a crisis of faith developed which appears to have
left some deep scars. He writes with the hope that his readers might stand
in awe before the existence of a “Master Designer” and that Scriptures properly
interpreted do not conflict with what God has also written in the physical universe.
